Auckland - Tāmaki Makaurau

New Zealand's largest city is popular for it's volcanic landscapes and vibrant culture. It's waterside location and high density of boats has given the city the nickname "City of Sails".

The city of Auckland was built on a volcanic field with about 50 volcanoes within 1,000sq km. The most recent volcanic eruption took place 600 years ago and formed Rangitoto Island.

With close to 200,000 Pacific Islanders living in the city, 28% of Auckland's population is of Polynesian decent.

Once the capital of New Zealand, the city was named by William Hobson after his patron and friend, George Eden, 1st Earl of Auckland in 1842.
